About Me
I have been working in the field of mental health for over 20 years in a variety of settings: a center for children and families, an outpatient mental health clinic treating mental illness and substance abuse, and a domestic violence shelter. I formed my private practice as a psychotherapist in NYC in 2006.
Prior to my career in mental health I worked as a dancer, actor and choreographer.
I earned my BA from Brown University and my MSW from New York University. Subsequently I became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and then earned my “R” after working the required additional hours in clinical settings. After 4 years of further study I became certified as an NKH practitioner (see NKH description). In addition, I have a certificate in Mindfulness Meditation.
I view my work now as a natural progression from the arts, which also explore the richness of human behavior and expression.
About You
I work with people presenting a wide range of issues that include: depression, anxiety, career confusion, grief, trauma and post-traumatic-stress symptoms, eating disorders, relationship difficulties, reproductive issues and parenting struggles. I am very comfortable working with people of every sexual orientation, gender identity, race, culture and socio-economic background.
I work with those who are new to therapy and those who have experienced prior therapy and are now looking to do deeper work.
Our Work Together
I have an eclectic education and use a variety of therapeutic approaches including: psychodynamic, relational, interpersonal, cognitive-behavioral, body awareness, mindfulness and spiritual exploration. I have additional training in Gestalt therapy, Authentic Movement and Attachment Focused EMDR (AF-EMDR).
I see this work as a collaborative, creative process. Although I always bring my expertise, I hope to arrive in places of realization and expansion together. For those interested, I can incorporate various forms of mindfulness meditation and energetic healings (see NKH and Mindfulness and Body Awareness). I can provide EMDR sessions to address specific traumas, phobias or intractable issues.
Mindfulness and Body Awareness
Mindfulness is paying attention, without judgment, to the present moment. It is learning to recognize and accept your experience, thoughts, emotions and physical sensations at any given moment. When we are being mindful we are less likely to be consumed by our emotions or behave reactively. We are more likely to be calm and compassionate with ourselves and with others.
Paying attention to the sensations we experience in our bodies often informs us of our true feelings and helps us to experience greater insight. I enable people to “tune in” to bodily sensations during our sessions.
I often guide people in the midst or end of a session in brief mindfulness meditations. These meditations can soothe the mind and body as well as enhance our connection to mindfulness in life.
Nondual Kabbalistic Healing
Also known as NKH, Nondual Kabbalistic Healing “weaves the ancient wisdom of the Kabbalah, including the Tree of Life and the Four Universes, with Buddhist thought, the insights of quantum physics, a Western psychological understanding of the human condition, and the teachings of nonduality, into a deeply transformative healing modality.” NKH is based on a common theme in mysticism, which holds that we are all innately whole or healed, but that our life experiences often obstruct or obscure that wholeness.
NKH uses the Tree of Life, a central paradigm of Kabbalah, to understand the essential dynamics in a person’s history and current life situation. By using this framework one is able to “diagnose” what elements of the Tree are out of relationship or in discord. The healings are essentially an energetic effort to awaken and remind the “healee” of their innate wholeness when these elements are in relationship.
Regardless of who you are, my commitment is to help you explore and actualize yourself through self‐knowledge, compassion, and liberation.
Find Compassion For Yourself
The many ways we berate and judge ourselves lead not only to personal suffering but often to inflict suffering on others. How can you cultivate compassion for yourself (and hence others) in all areas of your life?
Know Yourself
Know your “story” and understand what in your past has shaped your perception of life, your emotional responses and your behavior. What about the way you exist now is an expression of who you truly are and want to be, or an expression of past habits and defenses?
Liberate Yourself
When you recognize your story, or the way your history prevents you from growing, you can begin to free yourself. How can you be empowered to be fully in the present and bring about change: physical, emotional and spiritual?
